is the book called "Kiss Dating Goodbye", written by Joshua Harris. Just to give a brief description of the author, he lives in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He is a pastor at Covenant Life Church. He speaks nationally and leads an annual conference for college students called New Attitude.
The reason why I would love to be trapped in this book is because this book really gave me a new attitude towards romance and relationships. In the past, I had the perception that romantic relationships involve courting the girl of your dreams, impressing her with expensive gifts and nice cars, not forgetting the flowers and chocolates. However, even though I do succeed in melting the girl's heart and making her feel touched, the relationship will end due to differences or quarrels. More often than not, once I get together with the girl, I will discover that actually the girl is not really the girl of my dreams and not my future wife-to-be.
Although people may say this book only applies to Christians, I beg to differ as certain values highlighted in the book are also applicable to non-Christians. Some people regard the dating segment of a relationship as a game; whereby the lesser time a guy spends in winning the girl's heart, the larger the boost of ego for the guy. Some guys may even regard dating as a form of satisfying their physical needs, especially if the girl is more head-over-heels than the guy, the guy can simply toy with girl's feelings. The book really enlightened and reminded me that a girl's feelings, be it whether she is a Christian or not, is very fragile and needs to be treated with tender care. A girl's feelings should not be treated lightly and should be respected and regarded positively. By doing so, a girl will feel that she is not treated unfairly due to her gender and also be able to differentiate which guy is the RIGHT one for her.
After reading the book, it really enlightened me a lot with regards to the right attitude I should have towards romantic relationships, and not dunk myself into a relationship without taking into account several factors that were highlighted in the book. Therefore, I would really urge those who experienced relationship problems before or currently to go get the book and rest assured, you will be enlightened and develop a new perspective towards romantic relationships, regardless of whether you are a Christian or not. Often not, people dream themselves to be in fairyland, having whirlwind romances and meeting their Prince Charming or Princess. However, we must be realistic and not day-dream, but make sure one has the right perspective towards dating; and through the grace of God, one will meet the RIGHT one.
Thus, I would like to end this post with 2 very interesting yet mindful questions that were mentioned by the author:
- What is your motivation in a relationship - pleasing yourself or serving the other person?
- Do you give yourself away physically or emotionally in ways you regret later?
Catch Inkheart in cinemas from 22 January 2009!
